Practical advice from 40 years on the job, plus the paperwork that is easy to forget when moving within Japan.
6 packing tips
- Start early, with the things you rarely useYou have more than you think. Begin at least a week ahead with off-season clothes, books and decorations. Bulky-waste collection has to be booked in advance, so arrange that early too.
- Measure the new home and plan the layoutNote where furniture goes, where the outlets are, and the width of the entrance, hallways, stairs and elevator. Photos make it easy to share.
- Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxesBooks and dishes in a big box become impossible to lift. Reinforce the bottom of each box with tape in a cross.
- Label boxes with the room, contents and priorityWrite the destination room and contents, and mark boxes you need first as "priority". A quick photo of the contents helps you find things later.
- Prepare appliances the day beforeEmpty and unplug the fridge, drain it and the washing machine. Photograph the cables of your TV, PC and router before unplugging, and back up important data.
- Pack a "moving-day bag"Valuables (bank book, seal, cards), phone charger, medicines, toiletries, keys to the new home and your internet equipment. Keep these with you rather than in a box.
Large furniture such as wardrobes, fridges, beds and sofas can stay as they are. Our staff wrap them with special materials on the day. Please tell us about fragile or valuable items when we quote.
Paperwork timeline
About 1 month before
- Set the moving date and get a quote
- Give notice to your landlord (often 1 month required)
- Arrange the internet connection for the new home (it can take 2–4 weeks)
- School or nursery transfer procedures
- Sort out bulky waste (municipal collection is by reservation)
About 2 weeks before
- Moving-out notification (tenshutsu todoke) at your city office. With a My Number Card you can apply online via Myna Portal
- Stop and start electricity, gas and water (online is possible; gas requires someone present for opening)
- Mail forwarding at the post office (1 year; can be done online)
- Update your address with your mobile carrier, NHK, newspaper and delivery services
- Greet your new neighbors and check the parking space for the truck
Within 14 days after moving
- Moving-in notification (tennyu todoke) and update your My Number Card / residence card address
- National health insurance, pension and child allowance procedures
- Driver's license address change (police station)
- Car or motorbike registration change (within 15 days, plus parking certificate)
- Update your address with banks, credit cards, insurance, online shops and payment apps
Doing the city-office procedures in one visit saves time. Required documents vary by municipality, so please check its website in advance. Foreign residents: remember to update the address on your residence card within 14 days.

We are hiring full-time drivers / movers. The job is household moves and large-appliance delivery with 2t–4t trucks, working in teams of two. A regular Japanese driver's license (manual) is required. Japanese language ability is needed for daily work.
